    Julehjerter (Christmas Hearts)

This is a very old custom in Denmark.
You make these heart baskets for the Christmas Tree, and when I was young,
they would be filled with candy and cookies.

Basically you fold a piece of colored paper, place the template on the fold
and cut it out. Then you cut the different slits carefully.
Second piece is cut the same way in a different colour paper.
Then the 2 pieces are braided together, and a strip glued on for the handle.
The designs change because of the different ways to cut the slits.

I have also made a few of the smaller ones without folding the paper (Single layer only).
Braid it and glue it to the front of a card to make a different Christmas card!
Designs that are too large can be reduced in size of course.
Example: Draw a square with 2" sides. At he center of the top of the
square draw a half circle with a 1" radius. Have fun!

If anyone would like to try - let me know if you have problems...

    Thank You Birthe,
I have also made these...when I was a Brownie leader , we made them as one of our craft projects..We did the Red ones...wow there are so many gorgeous ones and I had no clue as to the origin..

The famous Danish fairytale author Hans Christian Andersen
is said to have made the first one in 1867 for a girl he was in love with.
I don't know if this is true, but it did originate in Denmark.

    They are beautiful.
I've never done one and am thinking I would like to try.

Try the ones with the straight cuts first.
They are fairly easy to braid. Some of the fancy ones
    can be a challenge!
By the way - I even tried to design new ones,
just changing the direction of the cuts. It was fun.
The original ones use a special glossy paper - I just
bought a package of papers with different colour sheets.

We made those when I was in the kindergarten!

    So, Nordic custom, I guess.

We still make these to hang on the tree, and my children expect them to be filled with candy on Christmas eve.

I have not seen these but will have a go at trying them. Made baskets at a recent card making and paper craft day I went to but they were different.
Thank you for reviving the thread
    Take care everyone, Jean
