Important Disclaimer:This board DOES NOT endorse any of these sites or companies. This list is provided to allow our users to be aware of these products. Any download / install / and use of these products is the responsibility of the users. We will answer questions but we accept NO responsibility for these products.

List Updated on Oct. 26, 2011

First - I encourage all users to help make this list more complete and accurate. I appreciate any information forthcoming.

This list is not complete and most likely will never be complete. If any user finds another product and can provide the link to it and further information, it may be added to this list. Also, any user who finds some of the missing information or has more accurate information for any item in the list, the list will be updated.

This list is simply to provide information to users of what kind of help is out there for design, and display/print of cross-stitch patterns. Machine Embroidery is included but Plastic Canvas, Needlepoint, Beadwork and other products are not included in this list. If there is enough interest, another list of Other Products may be added later.

Now a look at the subject. All of these products accept and create files specific to them or other similar products. These are very special formats. Many patterns are also available in more common patterns. These include:
      1. .ZIP - Compressed data. File (or files) contained within may be of any extension. If you are running Windows ME or higher, no external program is required. The zip processing is part of the operating system. However, 7Zip handles more than just .ZIP and is handy even if you do have a zip handler built in. Common products available are: WinZip. EasyZip, and 7-Zip
      2. .RAR - Compressed data. Similar to .zip, the files found within this format may be themselves of any format. This format is more common in some areas of the world than others. Free reader is 7-Zip
      3. .PDF - Portable Document Format - Data file. Some products that accept this format are Adobe and FoxIt
      4. .DOC/.DOCX - Microsoft Word
      5. .XLS/.XLSX - Microsoft Excel (very rare)

Let's take a look at the table itself:

The extension of the data that is produced/accepted is shown in the first column. If you know of any of the MISSING extensions, please let us know.

The second column shows whether the software is for hand or machine stitching.

The fourth column is the most complicated. It shows the status of the software and if there is a free viewer/demo version available. The different values are:
      • Yes - Free viewer/demo version available
      • No - No free viewer found
      • FREE - The entire product is free to any user
      • Share - The product is Shareware - you may use it for trial but you are expected to pay for it after a limited amount of time. The product may be limited if not licensed.

The company name, if known, is the next column while the final column is assorted notes of interest about the product.

I have 2 seperate CDs of hand pattern programs -
        • Jane Greenoff's "CrossStitch Pattern Creator" (1999 win 95/98 version) by Focus Multimedia Ltd, which does *.pat. It's the "deluxe" version, with a second CD of 2000 motifs. I won it as part of a stash collection on ebay, but the website for the current version (changed name to "JG's cross stitch designer" is http://www.focusmm.co.uk/shop/Jane-G...er-pr-123.html) - this is also the mob who do CrossStitcher Card & pattern maker http://www.focusmm.co.uk/shop/CrossS...or-pr-201.html
        • DMC Cross Stitch Pattern Designer (2001 version win 98-XP) by M&R Technologies, which also outputs *.pat. Can't find a website for this one - a google search is mostly bringing up ebay sites.
Don't know if this is useful or not

        Tonia,

The Jane Greenoff site - is that a sales site or the site of the owner of the product (developer/copyright owner)?

M&R Tech makes PCStitch and PatternViewer. This DMC product you list may be a version of PCStitch. I'll be over on the PCStitch forum later and I'll ask Mark (President of M&R) about it.

Mark said that the DMC product is based on PCStitch 7 and is a republication in the UK branded by DMC. I've added a note to the PCStitch item above.

Sorry - the CDs have the "Focus Multimedia" logo and website on them, but the copyright is listed as both Jane Greenoff and IL Soft. Designs (http://www.ilsoft.co.uk/content.aspx?page=HOME) which doesn't list this one, but does have a new product "Stitch R-XP" (your list No.5). I mainly plunder it for the motif library & use the DMC one for pattern design.

Thanks for tracking the DMC one down - I'm assuming it's equivalent to the standard rather than the pro version?

PCStitch 7 is the standard version, Pro is version number 8.0.X.

The DMC version is definitely Standard. It's 2001 and Pro didn't come out until much later. Mark said version 7 which is Standard.

We still don't have other than a sale site for the Jane Greenoff product.

My guess is that since it's not listed on the IL Soft site, it's been superceeded by their XP release.

I tend to agree with you. I'm wondering if it isn't the same prodcut under a different name (like the DMC form of PCStitch). Does anybody know?

We could make a pretty good guess if we knew what format the Jean Greenoff product used. That's not in my table.

Many thanks Diane, for this great compilation of software.

I would be interested to buy one database to can make inventory of my floss, fabric, projects...

So.. I've seen there is Cross Magic, and I've seen there is another one, Needlework database from Rick's Charts.

I would like to ask you if anyone of you have any of both programs and which one do you think it's better.

        Many thanks for your answers.

        Hugs

        This is Jane's own site:

        http://www.thecrossstitchguild.com/software.asp#23147

        Also found these:
        http://www.bmsoftware.com/crossstitchdesignergold.htm
Specifications - but no demo as far as I can tell.

        Administrator's Note:
Thanks for the link to Jane's site. I didn't put in the others because they are related but not the same and I don't want to confuse the users any more than necessary. I am changing my list to include the link for Janes site (and remove the red).

I added notes to embird & Cross Stitch Pro for their "sharing" ability and to XStitch that there is a Mac version.

        Thanks, Birthe!

I haven't heard of it either, Birthe but since it's for the Mac, I'm not surprised. Compared to other products, it seems a bit pricey ($79.99 for US). However, I will add it to the list soon.

A limit of 3 symbols for the trial version is a bit limited!

Note in the table at the start of this thread that there is a new cross-stitch editor. It is still in development so you can try it now and have some input in the features it has.

I've been working with it and I personally like it but it doesn't have all the needed features YET.

If you're interested, give it a download for a try. You can use the myriaCross "Contact Us" to communicate with the developer.

        Have fun!
